It’s hard to believe that the first five months of 2026 are over. I honestly don’t know where the time goes.
I’ve been thinking lately about how often this happens. Particularly, how much time we spend going through the motions, doing things because we’ve always done them instead of choosing to change where we are based on where we want to go. Doing the same things we’ve always done, even when we know those things are no longer aligned with the person we want to be.

I often find myself making decisions based on the mindset of my old self, not the version of myself I want to become.
This weekend, I took time to work through these questions:
- How much of my time do I spend going through the motions, not paying close enough attention to how I feel, whether what I’m doing is out of habit or necessity, and whether I really want to be doing it?
- Over the last five months, how much time and money have I spent doing things I truly love?
- How much time have I spent in situations that I didn’t want to be in?
- How often have I thought I needed to change something, yet haven’t, only to continue doing the very thing I said I wanted to change?
- How much time have I spent with people and in situations that didn’t feel right or weren’t a good use of my time?
- How many times did I not follow my gut instinct and regret it?
The answers I came up with were not unexpected. This is a habit, and it’s not what I want.
I want to be more mindful of the choices I’m making in all aspects of my life. That requires actively thinking about things before I do them.
So I came up with a decision filter. It’s something I’m going to try to implement when making decisions in my life. My goal is to consciously think about what I’m doing and whether the choices I’m making are based on old habits or on the person I want to become and the life I want to create.
Living life true requires being mindful of our habitual responses. It means making decisions based on the person we want to become, not the person we’ve been. Just because we made certain decisions in the past doesn’t mean we have to make them now or in the future.
You can create your own decision filter, or if you’d like to use mine as a template, please do. You can find that HERE. Drop a comment and let me know if you add a decision filter to your toolbox.
